This past weekend I had the wonderful chance to photograph the Idaho State Chariot Championships, doing the win photos on Saturday & Sunday. What a fun weekend! The weather was nice and the horses were fast. If the weather continues to improve it is going to be a glorious spring with great photo opportunitites!

Buckskin Stallion

I have a legitimate excuse, really! Last week my husband and I were in Vegas for a veterinary conference, and not once did I acess the laptop. (Course, I still had my Blackberry!) ;-)

While we were gone, my mother-in-law was up from Colorado to watch the kids, so on Friday we headed out to the HMA to show her the horses. Breeding season is in full swing, with lots of squealing and rearing, and even new babies since the last time I was out a few weeks ago. The old grey stallion didn’t show much interest in these games, but the younger boys were definitally vying for attention, and there should be some colorful foals next year!

Oh, and on another note, the domestic horse that was abandoned out there has found the herd, and although he remains on the outskirts of them, he has been allowed to follow them around. He has even put on a pound or two.

Enjoying a Good Roll

A little bay colt watches his dam as she enjoys a good roll in the sand in between winter snow storms. Although there are foals born year-round for the Saylor Creek herd, we are heading into the best of the photo-op seasons, with 20+ foals expected to be born between March and May.

A sorrel colt was born while I was out on the range on Friday (what a cold start to life it was), breeding season is in full swing, with both Grey Boy and Troublemaker covering mares in their respective band, and quite a few healthy looking colts and fillies already covering ground.

One thing about Idaho, it has beautiful sunrises. And one thing about young kids, you are always awake to see them! Although we have had nothing but wind and rain here this week, so the camera has been staying safely indoors while I get caught up on end-of-year things.

This years catagories are:

Performance - Horse(s) in competition, training or work. Under saddle or in harness. Horse(s) must be in motion
Horses and Humans - Illustrating the bond between horse and human. Must show a horse with a person, or parts of horses and humans interacting.
Head Study - The horses head only, no people. May be one or multiple heads
The Horse at Liberty - Showing the horse in its natural environment: pasture, in the wild, etc. May or may not be in motion.
Extreme Action - Rodeo, racing, jumping, obstacles, or running free, must depict extreme action and the athleticism of the horse.
Black & White - Black and white photos of horse(s) Sepia also allowed. No color!
Artistic - Your artistic treatment, may include photoshop or darkroom manipulation or creative use of camera controls.

And I need help deciding which photographs to enter…..any suggestions?

With the 4 young kids running around, I know that a daily picture would be too much and I would never be able to complete the challenge, but perhaps a photo-a-week? I won’t limit myself to just horses either, and will certainly take any suggestions for topics to adhere to. The benefits of this self-motivational project are great, as many of us learned during EPN’s recent challenge, which is why so many of us are trying to continue it!
